Man Gets Sober

Step 1 - Make your decision

Here's what you need to do

This decision will be one of, if not the biggest, of your life. You need to make it for yourself, and you need to be 100 percent sure it’s what you want. If not, you will fail.

Reflect on the chapters of "Man Gets Sober" and recognize the parts that resonate with your own experiences, acknowledging that these are indicators of underlying issues.

Understand that you're not alone in your struggles, and the shared experiences of me and many others offer hope and reassurance.

The crucial step is to make a decision – a genuine, personal commitment to get sober for yourself. Not for your wife, partner or family, but you. It ALL about you.

Embrace the simplicity of the message: "Stop drinking and/or taking drugs, and everything will get better." If you genuinely want things to improve, commit wholeheartedly, ensuring your decision is resolute and not just a tentative attempt. By doing so, you've completed the first step towards change. You’ve made your decision.

Celebrate your commitment, knowing that those around you, as well as yourself, will be proud of this decision.

Self-Reflection and Recognition

  • Begin by reflecting on the aspects of the book (if you haven't read it, reflect on your current situation) that resonate with your own experiences.

  • Identify sections where you see yourself, acknowledging that these are indicators of underlying issues. This self-awareness is the first step toward change.

Acknowledging the Need for Change

  • Accept that the majority of people going through similar challenges desire a way out.

  • Acknowledge your own desire for change and understand that there is a path to sobriety.

Essential Components of Sobriety

  • Understand that achieving sobriety necessitates two fundamental elements: a decisive commitment and a well-structured plan.

  • Recognise that success rarely comes instantly and may require persistent effort (don’t worry about slipping up!).

The Power of Decision

  • Internalise the message that the core of sobriety lies in a genuine, personal decision. Your desire to get sober should stem from a profound internal commitment, free from external influences or superficial motivations.

  • This is your decision, no one else’s. It must come from you!

Embracing Change with Pride

  • Experience the transformative power of your decision.

  • Feel the pride and excitement for the future as you embark on the exhilarating journey toward a new and better life.

Wholehearted Commitment

  • Ensure that your commitment to change is wholehearted, driven by an unwavering conviction that nothing will hinder your success.

  • This is not a trial; it's a genuine decision to transform your life.

Understanding that you are one of many

  • Recognise  that you're not alone in your struggles. Many individuals, like me, have faced similar challenges with addiction.

  • Understand that a shared experience can provide a sense of connection, hope, and reassurance that transformation is possible.

Gratitude for Sobriety

  • Embrace the notion that sobriety brings daily happiness.

  • While leaving behind a destructive past may feel like leaving an old and loved club, recognize that it's a necessary departure for personal growth.

Formulating Your Plan

  • Realise the importance of crafting a personalised plan to transition from where you are now to where you want to be.

  • Learn from my journey and the experiences of those who have also successfully transformed their lives. (see free downloadable planner for help).

Understanding the Journey

  • Learn from my personal story and the lessons shared.

  • Recognise that the difference between success and failure lies in wanting sobriety more than continuing the destructive path.

Simple Yet Profound Decision

  • Embrace the simplicity of the decision: "Stop drinking and-or taking drugs, and everything will get better." Internalise this mantra as the guiding principle for your sober journey.

Celebrating Your Initiative

  • Celebrate your commitment to change. Know that those around you, as well as yourself, will be proud of your decision.

  • Recognise that this initiative is a commendable step towards a brighter future.
