Man Gets Sober

Step 9 - Slipping up

The Fantasy of Using Again

  • Accept that reminiscing about the good times with substances is normal, but be aware of the fantasy.

  • Develop a counterargument in your mind, emphasising the positive changes and improvements in your life since becoming sober.

Overcoming Shame after Slipping Up

  • Embrace the reality that slipping up is not a reflection of failure or shame.

  • Resist self-condemnation and leverage the experience as a lesson for personal growth and resilience.

Slipping Up is Not Failure

  • Understand that slipping up is a part of the journey and doesn't equate to failure.

  • Use slip-ups as opportunities for self-reflection and learning, reinforcing the decision to pursue sobriety.

Getting Back Up After a Fall

  • If a slip-up occurs, acknowledge it, get back up, and continue the journey to sobriety.

  • Seek support from others, share your experience, and leverage resources like YouTube for inspiration from stories of multiple attempts.
